Best Breakfast in Woodland Park, CO: Hungry Bear

If you live near or in Colorado Springs, you can drive 30 minutes northwest and wind up in the city of Woodland Park, Colorado, and Woodland Park is truly a gem of the state. It's nestled in the breathtaking Rocky Mountains of Colorado, is a charming mountain town that captivates visitors with its natural beauty and small-town charm. Surrounded by pristine forests and set against a backdrop of majestic peaks, this picturesque city offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to Woodland Park year-round to explore its extensive network of hiking and biking trails, enjoy scenic drives, and engage in winter sports during the snowy months. With a friendly community, a vibrant downtown area filled with shops and restaurants, and a welcoming atmosphere, Woodland Park is a delightful destination for those seeking both relaxation and adventure in the heart of Colorado's stunning wilderness.

Now, in this city, people visit the same common haunts for a great dinner. But, when it comes to breakfast, one spot hits the heart (and appetite) of the city - The Hungry Bear. This little morning eatery is located in the center of the city. You can find it near the intersection of South Park Dr. and East Midland Ave. Let me put it this way, If you're familiar with the BierWerks (the German beer bar), you're right next to it.

This is a local unpretentious diner that offers a wide variety of breakfasts until 2pm. It's a morning institution for decades with an efficient system with a fun, bear-themed ambiance from wall-to-wall. I've been traveling to Woodland Park for work (I'm in the real estate business) for years and I probably visit the Hungry Bear 10 times per year...maybe a little more than that. From time to time, one of the waitresses (Trish) sees me sit down for a meal and says, "Welcome back....haven't seen you in a few weeks." So, I'm not a normal customer...but I visit this place enough to develop a 'customer memory.'

I'll quote my best friend - "This place is an adorable home-style diner." The hungry bear mascot warms the hearts and tummies of all who enter its charming doors. The theme here is irresistibly cute, with plush bear décor adorning the walls and tables, creating a snug and inviting atmosphere. The menu at the Hungry Bear is equally endearing, featuring hearty comfort food like fluffy pancakes with honey and syrup drizzle, delicious pastries, and piping hot bowls of anything you love to eat in the morning hours. The friendly staff supports the same mentality - fun, sweet and down-to-earth. To me, it's not just a place to eat; it's a bear-hug for the soul, where every visit feels like a warm embrace from your favorite teddy bear.

The menu itself is what you'd expect from a small, hometown diner - Bear Breakfast Burrito with Ham and Sausage Gravy, Cranberry Nut French Toast, half biscuit and gravy, potato hash browns...you get it. Now lunch is also an options; as I mentioned, this spot is serving wonderful food until 2 pm...and lunch is available. For example: Hawaiian Burger and fries, Chicken Fried Steak topped with eggs, egg burritos and much more.

My favorite meals (I order it about 85% of the time) are usually a toss-up between the breakfast sandwich with a strawberry crepe or the cranberry nut french toast...with a side order of something called 'Biscuits in the Mounty'. Once, they offered a special of 'Butterscotch Banana French Toast' and I ordered one for breakfast...and another order for the road. Yes, it was that good. If I arrive at about lunch time, my favorite order is the roast beef French dip & an order of fried okra. Outstanding stuff. Wonderful food.

The Hungry Bear has a great small town atmosphere with friendly staff. The food was fantastic and well-priced as you would expect in a small cozy diner, with massive portions. I had bacon, eggs, and pancakes, and will be making this spot a regular place for my trips into the mountains.

At the Hungry Bear, you'll appreciate this cherished diner. They provide good old-fashioned customer service is the heart and soul of the dining experience. As you step through the doors, you're greeted with a warm smile and a hearty welcome, making you feel like a treasured regular, even if it's your first visit. The waitstaff (especially Trish) possesses a rare blend of friendliness, attentiveness, and genuine care, ensuring your coffee cup is never empty and your meal is served with a side of camaraderie. They take the time to chat, remember your favorite order, and offer helpful suggestions, creating a sense of belonging that transcends the boundaries of the dining table. In an era of fast-paced modernity, this diner harkens back to a time when the customer was not just a patron but a valued guest, and the dining experience was a warm and memorable affair.

When you're in Woodland Park, you want a fantastic breakfast...the Hungry Bear is your place.
