Crested Butte's Amazing Tamales - Teocalli Tamales

Crested Butte is a fantastic ski-town that's nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. A charming and picturesque mountain town known for its stunning natural beauty and vibrant community spirit. Renowned for its world-class skiing and snowboarding in the winter, as well as exceptional mountain biking and hiking opportunities in the summer, Crested Butte offers outdoor enthusiasts a paradise of adventures throughout the year. Its historic downtown, with colorful Victorian-era buildings, exudes a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere, featuring a variety of shops, restaurants, and art galleries. And although there are numerous options for a tasty meal, one spot stands out with their vibe, cuisine, value and flavor - Teocalli's Tamales. I know what you're thinking - Tamales in Crested Butte? Yep. Definitely.

There's no question that a great burrito is a delicious and satisfying meal that combines various ingredients in a harmonious and flavorful way. While personal preferences can vary, there are several key factors that contribute to making a great burrito: Well-seasoned chicken, steak, pork, or shrimp along with other fresh ingredients, rice, beans and cheese. If someone puts them together in an ideal combination, you've got a hit on your hands. Well, Teocalli definitely hits the target, dead-center. Tasty, hearty, fresh ingredients, very helpful service, add-ons easy, with a line out-the-door and served with a smile. That's how you do it.

The only challenge for Teocalli's is that it's a small café that can be easily overlooked in downtown Crested Butte, but it's worth a stop. Crested Butte has grown so much and there's a great deal that can catch your attention. I can't imagine the number of people who were searching for a great meal, walked on by and didn't even know this spot existed. But for those who have dined here, Teocalli's is well-known for delicious tamales and burritos. During my last trip, we enjoyed two beef street tacos and then finished it up with a pulled pork tamale plate. Outstanding grub. Everything is prepared at the counter with the toppings of your choice. I brought a friend of mine who tried this place for the first time. And when we were walking back to our car, he said "I really liked the tasty food and the relaxed vibe of this place. I'll be coming back here."

We've been to Teocalli a few times when we're in Crested Butte on business and I can honestly state that I would highly recommend it whether you're looking for burritos, tacos or, my favorite, tamales. Everything tastes super fresh and, if you love to spice things up, ask to try the hot sauces that have such a kick they have to be kept behind the counter. The guys that work at Teocalli are incredibly friendly which is much appreciated.

My personal recommendations when you pay Teocalli's a visit:

  1. Start with the queso. It's some of the best I have ever sampled. I ordered it every time I visit this spot.

  2. Arrive for a meal before dinner usually begins. Seating is limited so get in before the rush of locals.

  3. For your entrée, order three things - pork tamales, a steak burrito bowl and finished your meal off with a Lime Margarita on the Rocks. A perfect way to end the meal.

  4. Park two blocks away. Finding an ideal spot is a nightmare on most days.

Pay them a visit and you'll be happy with your decision.
